It is just amazing that most sports fans aren't really capable of thinking critically about sports decision and base their opinions on old-wives tales and "conventional wisdom."

I don't lack critical thinking skills, I just don't understand the math involved. If going for 2 on a very regular basis is a good idea, as some here are advocating, how come NO coach has ever done this? Don't get me wrong, coaches can be idiots, but if this is such a good idea, wouldn't one coach have caught on by now?

[/ QUOTE ]

We had a thread about this recently. What you have to consider is the fact that the coaches desired outcome and the teams desired outcome are NOT the same thing. They are often very close, but they are not the same thing. And thats mostly because fans, alumni, and administrators are kinda idiots.

Because coaches think like you. "Nobody else does it...it must be wrong!"

Think about it this way. Do you think you could tell the difference, just by watching, without writing anything down, between a .600 team and a .650 team, over the course of a season? Even over the course of 5 or 6 seasons? There is almost no way you'd notice the difference.

But you'd definitely notice the difference between a coach who goes for 2 in the first quarter and one who doesn't.

Going for 2 and making it gives you such a large advantage, though. Giving up a TD puts you down only ten, giving up a field goal means a td takes the lead, and stopping them means you only need a field goal.

If you miss it and give up a field goal, you just have to go for 2 again. You're going to make 1/2 something like 70% of the time.

why do cameramen feel the need to do extreme closeups of the guy with the ball so I can't see what everyone is cheering about when the field is wide open?

Question of the day:

What team is the biggest surprise in college football? South Florida or Illinois? Any other teams?

I mean, there's no way anybody thought Illinois was this good.
