Wakefield has been left OFF the ALDS roster due to injury. this must explain a lot of the decision

I'm sure it matters a little. But, I have no doubt anybody analyzing this seriously is putting way too much importance on it.

The simple answer is the right one. The Red Sox took the longer series so their players (especially pitchers) could get more rest.
