“Any pro who plays big in house games like craps and non-counting blackjack could go broke.”

“Good point. TJ Cloutier there you go.”

Five or six years ago (can’t the exact time period, but it was before the poker explosion), I was playing blackjack at the Golden Gate casino in Downtown Vegas. Back then, the GG offered single deck blackjack with $5 minimums. I sit down to the right of T.J.. I begin betting $5 a hand, with T.J. wagering either $5 or $10. Then, the count grows to plus 7 or 8. I bump my bet to $25. At the same time, T.J. plays two hands for $50 each.

The dealer then looks at the deck, and decides to shuffle. T.J. sits back and lifts his right hand as if to say WTF. The dealer, who speaks little or no English, points to the deck as if to say “not enough cards for another hand,” which is BS of course. The pit boss comes over, and motions to the dealer that she should shuffle.

T.J. pulls down his bets, and plays one $5 hand. I decide to take a cautious approach and leave my $25 out there, which I lose on the next hand. I get up.

My point: I think T.J. counts cards.

Ok to the guy who says I'm not right about Matusow, check this out. The guy dumps over 50k in less then 2 hours. He wins against other players in ring games, but can't win against Dag's and Kris queen. It isn't just about him not catching cards. If you watch him against these level of players you'll notice a few things. Mike wins small pots. Kris and Dags won every big pot. They completely controlled him, like the tourney pawn he is in their cash game. Mike is an above average cash game player, but has no chance against people that good in a cash game. Furthermore he has no self control. He kept losing 10k, and digging back into his pockets. Even so, he still played scared. Getting bluffed by Kris and losing amounts like 5k in the process. For a guy who really needed that 1 million, he has to be hurting. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but he is outclassed and out gunned. If you don't believe me, just watch him on full tilt play short handed cash games some time. Cash game players rule! Later.

I'm guessing this is the first time you sweated a high limit game or something. You're making way too much of the results of one session.

I think the smartest players are the ones that are not only playing poker to make money but also getting into the business end of it. I would hope that the big tourney winners with the huge bankrolls are using some excellent financial consultants. They would be a fool not to.
How about this...Do you think a certain image when your a pro can produce additional +EV? Maybe that image would build up a fan base that would give you commercial spots and airtime. Almost like pro wrestling but real. After all when is the last time you seen todo leonidas doing a commercial for milwakee light?

He might count. But going from one hand of 5 to 2 hands of 50 in a single deck game aint the way to go about it.Ive also seen maybe people who attempted to count. Most are not very good. They dont properly count,or they dont know stratgy changes. Sometimes they have no disipline. One time at the plaza this asian kid was counting perfectly but didnt even know basic strategy.

Poker skill has nothing to do with this question at all, why some of you are discussing it is beyond me. It's a %100 BR Management question...

And without knowing their actual bankroll, it's almost imposible to tell. You can say, oh this guy is a gambler, and always playing too high...but whose to say he doesn't have a bankroll to support it...? The only thing you can go on is rumors, or just look at who has gone broke in the past.

More than likely spoken by a guy who has never gone broke.

I've seen an awful lot of misspellings in my day, but "gye" is a first.
