How to induce a reraise when you have an overpair or a monster.
Hi,
-What bet do you usually make when you have a good hand (say an overpair with no draws possible on the board or top two pairs or trips) 1) when you have position ? 2) when you dont ? Overbetting ? Betting very little (33% of pot, 25% ?)? (Let's just say checking is not an option althought most of the time we know that slowplaying can be very effective to get the chips in) I know there is probably no magic formula for inducing a bluff but im sure you have something to teach here. Thank you. |

most of the time we know that slowplaying can be very effective to get the chips in [/ QUOTE ] QFT. EDIT: You probably play the lower limits so just keep on value-betting. If the board is super dry bet less than if it's wet. But keep on betting and building that pot. No need to get fancy. Post actual hands blaa blaa... |

It depends on stack sizes. I try to bet an amount that is small enough so that your opponent thinks there is a good chance you will fold if he pushes/raises over your bet, while also ensuring your bet is big enough to get your opponent all-in by the river if he simply flat-calls all the way.

Check/Calling to the river tends to work against me.
(Make sure you limp preflop) |

What seems to work best for me is to repeat my previous bet. I do this OOP and if checked to me. Villains often see this as a weak attempt to steal the pot, and come over the top. Works best against TAGs. OOP v LAGs, check and let them hang themselves.

I always have to remind myself that the point of poker is not to be clever, but to win the money.
If straightforward valuebetting on every street will win against a given opponent, then that's what should be done. If you set an elaborate trap and checkraise him on the river and he folds, then sure, you tricked him and that's great, but you didn't make any more money. |

I would almost never be betting 25% of the pot, giving the opponent 5 to 1 on the call. With an overpair or a monster (unless its the mortal nuts on a flop where he cannot catch up) I am looking to build the pot on flop/turn/riv to have as many chips in the middle as possible at showdown. Smallish bets make this more difficult

It's interesting to watch the dynamics of bet sizing on different sites. Because FTP has a tab for "Bet Pot" built into the software, it seems in general SnG bet sizes are way larger on FTP than on stars.

Re: How to induce a reraise when you have an overpair or a monster.
I'm back down to the 6.50s from the 27s, and I had never realized how hilarious the action is there. I look around at my tables and I have my 'minraiser' note on nearly every person.
Usually the only solid way to induce a bluff I've found is if an opponent knows you cbet and check the turn if you have nothing. If you have position and check behind on the turn, he will often bet the river with nothing. Once again though, the opponent has to be somewhat sentient, which at the micro levels is rare at best. |
