[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Good call on Warren Zevon. Best one I could think of. I even started a thread about this very topic last fall, asking why he isn't more well known. [/ QUOTE ] He had two top 40 hits, a top ten album and two gold records. That's pretty freaking famous. [/ QUOTE ]WAHOOOOOO Also, my choices: Jack Kerouac Bob Dylan(though this in mainly in reference to my friends) Gah, so many others I can't think of atm Dostoevsky(famous but amazing) [/ QUOTE ] Unlike all the other people in this thread I've never heard of, all three of those people are very famous. |

Here's one: Possibly the smartest man alive. Ed Witten singlehandedly resolved a lot of the dualities (~paradoxes) in string theory and has set the field off in whole new directions. [/ QUOTE ] If string theory ever amounts to anything as an actual descriptor of the world, I'll get on board for this. Until then, I think a Fields medal is probably about the right amount of fame for Witten. |

Nikola Tesla, mainly for what he foresaw and how much more ingenious he was than his more famous contemporary, Edison.

[ QUOTE ] Leo Szilard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le%C3%B3_Szil%C3%A1rd [/ QUOTE ] Totally. It always bugged me when kids would do projects on Einstein's involvement with the Manhattan project when all he did was write a letter. Szilard was the real man who got the ball rolling. [/ QUOTE ] Of course Einstein also came up with the science that made it all possible. |
