I'm curious what kind of personal experience you had in Japan that made you think that Japanese think they are "the cream of the whole crop." Care to elaborate?

[/ QUOTE ]

There's no one experience, just a lot of late night conversations with copius amounts of substance abuse with Japanese rafting guides. A lot of talk about the structure of Japanese society, the attitude to outsiders, the view of other races, etc. It was all very enlightening stuff and I was always careful to not talk about any of it with them in the light of day as it made them very uncomfortable.

Many "no foreigners" allowed policy in the soap lands. I've always been curious to see how they were. Although, I know I'll probably be disappointed since I've been to Macau many times.

The Japanese used to refer to Koreans pejoratively as the "garlic eaters."

An Australian friend of mine who lived in Japan summed it up like this; The Japanese are the most polite racists on the planet.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's a very good way of putting it. Japanese people like visitors, but they definitely don't like poeple moving to their country. As a result, it's extremely hard to get citizenship if you're not Japanese.

It's hard to explain, but they're definitely very polite about it, but obvious. If they don't want you there, you'll feel it, but they won't once be rude to you.

It's a lot less evident when it comes to Japanese who emigrate to the U.S. because a lot of the time those are the Japanese who are fleeing the oppressiveness of Japanese culture like my parents. Many find that once they come to a less repressive place, they can't deal with going back.

that is hilarious.

just got back from japan to visit...i'm eating lunch at the park hyatt (new york grill, which was on the lower end of a good meal) and there's a white guy sitting with his japanese wife and their newborn baby. all grandparents are present.

my uncle looks over to his wife and says, "looks like her parents forgave her". true story.

Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so.

Sorry, just had to get that out.

An odd footnote. I'm been in Japan at least 40+ times - but I've never left the airport while there or entered the country.

It's illegal to show genitalia in an explicit manner in Japan.

Why do Japanese people wear t-shirts like these:

From what I could tell, the answer isn't "they're being ironic."

[/ QUOTE ]
The last time I was in Japan, no one was wearing T-shirts like that.

[/ QUOTE ]

These were taken on my trip to Japan last month. I saw literally dozens of others like this.

I think it's the equivalent to americans wearing things with asian characters on them and not knowing what it means (or worse, getting them tattooed on themselves). It's weird to think of english writing being "cool", but it is to a lot of people.
