[ QUOTE ] Steel Wheel, I wasn't talking about your post, I was talking to the guy questioning it. It's awesome to see posts like yours around nvg. [/ QUOTE ] Allen Iverson 10million per year, Reebok Michael Jordon 9.4 million per year, Nike Kobe Bryant 8million per year, Nike Joe the poker player 7million a year, PokerStars??????? We may all believe poker is big b/c we play, but overall poker is nothing compared to other sports. Stars is the largest site and it only has about 50,000 - 100,000 playing on it at a given moment WORLD WIDE. Sorry, but I have a very hard time buying a $7,000,000 a year deal for a guy who won the WSOP. [/ QUOTE ] Ya Pokerstars prolly only makes around $100k profit a year right??? |

I know this is obvious, but...
when they signed joe, they werent signing him because of who he is. they didnt even sign him because he was a main event winner. they signed him because he would be the third consecutive main event winner to be signed with stars; and it would therefor buy them the identity of being known as THE world series of poker site, even if it wasnt official. stars signing joe was a lot more valuable than, say, UB signing joe. He isnt a big draw by himself. But he is a piece of a bigger puzzle that, when completed, makes legitimate pokerstars claim to being the official world series of poker poker site. Having the 3 consecutive main event winners does this for them. Was he worth 7 million to have him signed for the year proceeding his win? I think there's no question that he was. The residual effects of him being signed that year are huge. The people who start playing on stars will most likel continue to play on stars. And they continue to benefit from all those new people who signed up during that time frame. Did he get paid that much? probably not. Clearly he isnt worth 7 million EACH YEAR. He is worth very little right now. |

It’s my understanding that the 7 million was a one time fee. Not a yearly payout like these other athletes have. This is ridiculous when you consider Pokerstars almost surly makes more profit than Rebook and Nike combined. |

Nike alone had over ~2 billion in profit last year. If Joe got himself 7 million he made himself a great deal. |

I can't see any relevance to your statement above and why it means that 7 million would seem reasonable. Nike has over 16 billion in income and 7 billion in gross profit per year, you think Stars makes that much gross? Marginal revenue generated on a per custiomer basis is worthless when comparing two entirely different entities and then trying to use that measurement as a means of comparative compensation. All that being true that doesn't meant that people aren't being overpaid every day all over the world. Wouldn't surprise me if he got 7 million plus perks, just that there is no way it was a great business decision if he did. Jimbo |
