Re: Popular (book, movie, etc) that you simply don\'t like.
Yeah, it still has a big fictive element in it, probably way bigger than most of us think.

[ QUOTE ]
Yes, I know, no one understands why rap is so popular. This is more for things that are absolute staples (not Britney, per se) of our society that seems like every, and I mean everyone, seems to like, but you just don't get it. Scarface: I don't like this movie. Everyone tells me they think it is the greatest ever. Who doesn't know who Tony Montana is? I think it is too long. It needs to be edited down. The story doesn't move fast enough for me, the acting isn't that great IMO, and I can't find myself empathizing, or admiring Tony. The Deer Hunter: Once again, I find this movie way way way to long. It poorly juxtaposed. Weren't they at a party scene, friendly, then fighting, the Robert DeNiro is playing Russian Roulette. What was going on this movie? From the first half, this movie is a total mess. The party scene reminded me too much of a beer commercial. The bottles of beer were placed in the most bizarre places. I watched just about half of this movie before I decided I had enough. Mind you that if some of the details are wrong, I have not seen this movie for a while. The Doors: I don't think that Jim Morrison deserves the credit for being a good singer as much as he does. All the songs are basically two-chord wonders, causing them to be monotonous. So, list it and explain to the world why you don't like it, because few people will ever understand. [/ QUOTE ] I guess you didnt watch Deer Hunter very closely. Its Christoper Walken who plays Russian Roulette...and defies the odds by living long enough to send tons of money back. That said its a good but not great movie. I think youre underrating the Doors and JM a bit. Perhaps you aren't a contemporary, and listening to it under more modern standards. The Doors were much better in the context of their time and place. JM's singing started out very strong, though his stage fright inhibited it early on. Then alcohol took over and he became a lot more of a screamer. But you can hear his influence in a lot of later singers...most notably David Byrne. My vote for movie I hate that others love is Lost in Translation. Like watching chinese paint dry and then eating the lead chips. |

Katy, ALLLLL reality TV sucks, especially American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. Its pure common denominator TV. [/ QUOTE ] Although I agree that many people watch it for the appeal of seeing people get kicked out and stuff, I know people that watch it for different reasons that are not "common denominator". Example: My mom is a dancer. She gives dancing lessons. A show like dancing with the stars appeals a lot to her because she sees what the choreographers do with the little talent they have (and how the professional dancers adapt to the celebrities). There's probably better dancing that my mom could watch on TV, but there's are just no shows; ballroom dancing competitions are very rarely shown on cable tv. Same thing might happen with American Idol and people that grew up singing all their lives or that give singing lessons. |

[ QUOTE ] Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. They totally screwed up the book when making the film. Douglas Adams must be spinning in his urn. [/ QUOTE ] You are either joking or ignorant. Douglas Adams wrote the script before he died and one of the few things he wished for before he died was the film got made as he tried numorous times with no success to sell the script - ironically it was probably his death which was the tipping point for it being picked up. He also wrote the books, radio show and TV show and was clearly a big fan in adapting and changing his work for the media it is shown in. [/ QUOTE ] Nevertheless. the story was changed after his time to turn it into a love story. The people who made the final film forgot it was meant to be a comedy. Just a side point, I heard the radio program when it first came out and also read the books when they came out. The BBC TV version was not just similar to the radio program - it was identical, word for word. The differences between the books and the radio program (second season) are obvious. However, they are a different story. The film is meant to be the SAME story - which it clearly is not. |

Dodgeball - this film is made for people who have the mental capacity of a downs-syndrome primate. I really don't get why the hell Ben Stiller is one of the most popular comedy actors today.
