$11 NLTRN - this turn feels yucky, no matter how I slice it
Poker Stars
No Limit Holdem Tournament Blinds: t15/t30 2 players Converter Stack sizes: SB: t1225 Hero: t1775 Pre-flop: (2 players) Hero is BB with 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] SB calls t15 (pot was t45), Hero checks. Flop: 6[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (t60, 2 players) Hero checks, SB checks. Turn: J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (t60, 2 players) Hero bets t45, SB raises to t90, Hero calls t45 (pot was t195). River: 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (t240, 2 players) Hero bets t150, SB raises to t630, Hero folds. Uncalled bets: t480 returned to SB. Villain hasn't done anything crazy. I've been fairly aggressive - Villain folds to most PF raises OOP, and limps medium to crappy hands in the SB. I'm confused by the turn here, but I'm not sure what else I could have done. Checking doesn't seem right, because I probably have the best hand, and a Villain bet after that check could mean anything. Should I fold to the min-raise? That didn't seem right at the time, because the raise was so small... which led to the river bet. I put it out there as a blocking bet, hoping to get called by a busted straight draw, maybe Ahx. The river fold seems pretty easy, but I'm mostly concerned with my turn play. Is check-calling the right move here? Or even check-folding? |

If most draws from the flop miss you can check call the river, but since a lot of draws hit your line is probably fine.
With a good read you can fold the turn minraise. Also, I wouldn't count on getting called by busted draws, that is still in his range here given the raise, but you can't call this light without good reads. |

Re: $11 NLTRN - this turn feels yucky, no matter how I slice it
I want to ask about how you and the other better players in this forum go about establishing good reads. The HUSNG's at this level seem rarely to get beyond 50 hands - this one ended at 22.
Additionally, I feel like not too many hands get beyond the flop, so the actions that we get to see Villains take are limited primarily to the betting rounds that sandwich the flop. For example, we might get to see an opponent bet an OESD on the flop but shut down when we call with top pair. Do we really have anything reliable when he bets a drawy flop 20 hands later, at the 25/50 level? I'm learning to make PF adjustments based on opponents' PF tendencies, but I'd obviously like to be able to refine those reads. I would definitely appreciate any thoughts you guys have. |
