Default Corrupt Harddisk - What can I use to boot / repair it?

I've been given a laptop with a dodgy hard disk, it won't boot.. stops with a hal.dll is missing message.

What program could I use to create a suitable bootable CD so I can scan & fix it. I had a superboot disk before with a bunch of tools on it but my mate f'ing lost it!!

What operating system is it running? XP?

My advice would be to reformat and reinstall no matter what OS it's running.
