[ QUOTE ]
Not a chance you can live off it. Let's look even at 25nl - and say a good winrate of 5ptbb/100 (10bb/100 hands). If you play 30,000 hands a month, that's 30000/100*.25*10 = 750 a month. A typical 6max table plays around 90 hands an hour, so 4-tabling we're talking about 83 hours of play time here, working out to around $9 an hour. And that's at 25nl. [/ QUOTE ] I play maybe 60k hands/month 6 tabling and I don't do it full time so your basic assumptions are a little off 60k @ 5PTBB/100 = 1500$ a month + 200-250$ in rakeback |

[ QUOTE ]
"An education" is overrated. If you look at it carefully in a lot of fields all you do is signaling your fitness to survive and willingness to adapt. If you look at an education in economics for example, what you learn at your average university can be selftaught in a year no problem. So basically what you do is get a certificate of your knowledge. [/ QUOTE ] Poeple need to learn to learn. You go to university to learn when the stakes are low. If someone is relying on you when it counts, you better have it together. Sounds like you're a little too disillusioned with society to give advice about it. School is a good idea, and I would never be able to naturally absorb a huge amount of economics and math without the experience of college. And if you're going to 10 table nl5, why not 1 table nl50, make GOOD reads on your opponents, and play REAL poker? Or do you make this 80 dollars a day in rakeback? -z |

the problem with living off poker is variance as mentioned
a) You should have at least 6months living expenses saved b4 starting b) You need to replenish every month what you spend directly from the bankroll c) Variance d) Variance e) Variance Last 6 months, I've played about 80hrs/month, and made $25/hr, but there have been some awesome months and some horrendous months where I play bad/run bad and only made like $700. |

I'm just bitter because I'm still mostly a breakeven player who makes his money from RB
I'd love to beat 50nl or 100nl at a moderate rate. I do feel like I'm a TON better than last year though. |

How can you possibly be happy about grinding all day and ending off financially worse than you were when you started? Poker is hell

Blah ... it ain't that hard .. only trouble is that a good deal of especially the young players are huge whining ego's.
Be humble about it and log the hours and it aint that hard to live of poker. Especially for some of the the US guys like thac working for 9.5$/hr in a factory at one point ... cmon, I make double that in rakeback alone. There are issues with moving up, as your roll gets cut in half and you have to calculate a higher risk of ruin, but with patience, no big deal. With regards to education, it is no big deal, but the paper shows that you are capable of delivering and so coorporations are willing to take you in and give you a shot at a good long term salary, which is nice, since let's face it, poker isn't what it was a mere year ago with Frist, ... and lastly the absolute scandal. Who knows how long it will be this sweet. And yeah, I'm an economist and no, you can't learn what I did in a year of selfstudy ... but then again five years might be overkill. That being said .. now that I have a job, I need very little economic skill in the daily work ... practically none actually. |
