Re: Pick the five sporting events you wish you had seen in person
I'd like to see the last day of the 1941 season when Ted Williams shot his average up from .3995 to .406 in a doubleheader, mostly just to see Ted Williams hit but that would be the day.
I suppose any Babe Ruth game would be next, probably would most want to see his "called shot" if it actually happened. Any Michael Jordan game in his prime. I watched most on TV but never got to see him live. Damn he was amazing. Same with Barry Sanders. Last but not least the Pedro Martinez vs. Roger Clemens game in May of 2000 when both threw 8 shutout innings, the Sox scored in the top of the 9th on a home run to take the lead. In the bottom of the 9th the Yankees loaded the bases but couldn't score on Pedro. Such an awesome game, I'd love to have been there. |

lol @ everyone saying the miracle on ice. It was for amateur athletes only so all the good canadian players and many of the good russian players were ineligible to compete.

[/ QUOTE ] WRONG, The US team were amateurs, but the Soviet team were all Officers in the Red Army. Plus after the controversy in the 1972 Olympic Basketball game, the Ice hockey victory was far sweeter. |

[/ QUOTE ] The USSR team was the best in the world. They beat the NHL All Stars (possibly slaughtered them but I'm not sure). Plus there's that whole USA/Soviet Union thing that was going on at the time. |

1966 and 1970 World Cup Finals. The former because I'm English and we will probably never equal this feat again. The second because watching the best ever example of a team in a certain sport is something that anyone should be willing to give their right and left arms to see.
I would have loved to have seen some of the Newcastle United vs Liverpool games during the Kevin Keegan management era, because they were incredible games played by two superb attacking teams, and even though we generally lost them, I'd love to have seen them live. Dear God, there's far too many great matches in football that I'd have loved to have seen live - if I was a Liverpool fan, then the 2005 Champions league final - I'd still quite like to have seen it... England vs Scotland in Euro 1996, just to see Gazza's goal. Man, so many. |

1980-81 NHL regular season scoring leaders
Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers 164 Marcel Dionne Los Angeles Kings 135 Kent Nilsson Calgary Flames 131 Mike Bossy New York Islanders 119 Dave Taylor Los Angeles Kings 112 everyone but kent nilsson is canadian; I just find it hard to take this victory or "miracle" seriously when so many of the worlds best weren't there |

Re: Pick the five sporting events you wish you had seen in person
The reason people list the Miracle on Ice was never for a "Best of the U.S." versus the "Best of the World/USSR," its because it was a classic story of a team that was expected to be mediocre rising up against the better teams they played against. Moreover, the political implications and the nationalistic feelings that the game provoked is one of the main reasons people claim its the greatest moment in sports history; because it transcended the game itself and touched people on a deeper level. It was more or less Democracy versus Communism in a real 'cold war.' It was the closest the U.S. got to demoralizing the Russians in a conflict of ideals.

There was no pretence that the 1980 US hockey team was a tea, of champions. Quite the contrary.
They were a champion team though. |
