I've been working my way through the book "Inside the Poker Mind," and two things jumped out at me the other day (among the many things in the book). First was the line that went something like, "don't focus on making money when you play, focus on making good plays." Simple, and I'd heard/read it before elsewhere, but it clicked for some reason this time. My last few pummelings, I've actually said out loud a few times "make good plays," and I think it's helping keep my head on straight.

The second suggestion was to take your notes on a player after the game and use them to come up with specific strategies for playing them. I haven't done this yet, but it seems like a simple but great idea to me. Both for the practical benefit when you run into that player again, and for the mental exercise in general.

I was playing a tournament and had JJ.

Final board was J 7 10 K 10

It was checked to me on the river and as I was about to bet my boat the guy chimes in. "Are you seriously going to bet into the nuts?" and I don't know why but I believed him and checked my boat only to have him flip up 10 10 !!!!!

he said "well u know AA is only 83% to win to the river against 2 random cards...i guess dude just knew what the 2 random cards were ahead of time"....

Ha, having friends that know about probability but don't play poker puts stuff like this in perspective...once I bitched about a similar beat to such a friend and he said, "Just 80%? That means you lose one in five times you know..."

Wel,l for this month it has to be this one from DD's well just a day or so ago. Wasn't to me personlly(but I copied it and use it personally now) but from someone else who asked him what were some of the biggest leaks for LHE.

DD replied,

"Biggest leak I notice...well Ed Miller has written about it in micro but people still fold too damn much (good players I mean, fish clearly don't). Being very pessimistic in counting outs. A big one is thinking your opponents think and play like you do, and making faulty assumptions / conclusions because of this"

Simple yet golden is it not

Pokerbob advised me to take shots at bigger games.
Scary_Tiger told me that the key to beating bigger games is to run hot.

Led me to play 30/60 and 40/80 live underrolled and ran good so those two combined.

And some HU/SH help from NinaWilliams/BBB/Scary, I guess.

From the man himself:
[ QUOTE ]

I completely agree that those who never push themselves past their comfort level are somewhat sad cases. If you can afford it, play in higher games than you are used to if for no other reason than it will help your game. If things work out you just may move up the stakes ladder for good. Don't just think of poker as a steady job if there is any chance at all you have not reached your peak. But you can do all this without being a sucker.

The best advice I had this month was from "Getting the best of It" This book is a gold mine! You can take a big step up just by reading the intro clip on Amazon. That is why I postulate that the term "pro" in poker has to do with who is the better gambler and a mere "professional" stands for cardplaying. Poker books explain the positive expectations of plays as in a house advantage but what about it seems worstwill this book brings out the concept of disadvantage in other words the other side of the coin. They write as money in the bank with this I may be the bank.(But tell David the stock market is going to crash soon)
