What to do when the table makes no sense.
So the place I play often in NY has some loose players. But recently, the play has gotten much looser with people just making all kinds of plays that percentage wise should never have been made in the first place. I feel that everyone is watching High Stakes Poker a little too much and just trying to play big stack not realizing that most of the time the successful players are making high percentage plays, not wild bluffs.
Recently at a 1-2NL game, the player to my right, who was on a roll and had worked 200 into about 800 said "don't get mad when I suck out on you" to the player who had just made a $15 raise into a $35 raise. The raiser calls. On a 3-5-6 rainbow flop the original raiser bets out 50. Guy to my right calls. Next card is a K, original goes all in for another 150, the boaster calls. River is a 4. Boaster turns over 2d-7d for the straight, original raiser had A-K. So my question is, when people are just playing any garbage and hoping it hits, it does make it harder to play solid. Yes, I could just tighten up completely and only play high pairs and AK type hands. But I am not playing 1-2NL to play one out of every 50 hands. And since people are playing almost anything, it seems that playing more hands could be beneficial. Any strategies that anyone want to share about sitting at a wild table? |

1/2 table. the player to my right raised from $2 to $15. The other player then raised it to $35. Which was more than double so it was legal. Maybe I did not word it so well.

Re: What to do when the table makes no sense.
Have a significant bankroll to play in these types of games, you likely need a decent amount more than the standard 15-20 buy ins.
When actually playing, play very tight preflop, but when you are dealt AA/KK/QQ/AKs/possibly JJ, try and get as much in the pot preflop as possible. If this means making a "ridiculous" raise of X # of BB's preflop, do it. If people are willing to make stupid calls when behind, give them the opportunity. If there's dead chips in the pot preflop, shove with big hands. Hammer the hell out of flopped nut flushes/straights/sets. Don't slowplay, value these hands big-time. |

Good Point firestorm. I slowplayed a straight and let someone catch a river flush because i had made it too cheap (which in this game was me being aggressive) for him.

Body-slam the pot with flopped straights, etc. Valuetown baby.

If you don't want people to play bad then you're beyond help. Encourage more of this play. All you can ever do is get your money in with the best of it.

[/ QUOTE ] 1 out of 50 is extreme but you seem to totally dismiss tightening up I know it has been said many times before but its usually beneficial to play opposite of how the table is playing. If its tight, play looser, if its loose, play tighter, just think about it a little bit and I think it will make sense. |
