OP, you're giving away money if he does pushups with any regularity. Maybe if you made it 30 mins that could be tough.

yep thats your only chance: chest has to touch the ground and arms have to lock out at the top, all with back straight.

Guys, this is really a whole lot easier than you would expect it to be. Especially for someone who is in really good shape already. I'd bet it can be done in under an hour for someone is excellent shape. To give an example from personal experience, here is one of the routines out of Ross Emanait's book "Never Gymless." Grab a shuffled deck of cards; Aces have a value of 11, face cards are 10, all others are face value. For every black card you turn over, you do that many pushups - ex. Ace of Spades = 11 pushups. For every red card you turn over, you do that many burpees, which is essentially a squat thrust but you go down into the bottom position of a pushup when you throw your legs back and you jump up as high as you can when you stand up - so you are essentially doing pushups in this exercise as well. The goal is to make it through the entire deck of cards. This would equal 380 reps of which 180 are true pushups and the other 180 reps have a pushup movement in them. It took me a about an hour to complete the deck and I was not in excellent shape by any means.

I bet my roommate $20 he couldn't do 500 pushups in 2 hours. He is in very good shape. 6'1" 180 with a max bench of 225. How good is my money here?

[/ QUOTE ]

I have almost the exact same height, weight, and strength level of your roommate and I would take this bet. Doing 5reps/min for the first 20 minutes then doing 4reps/min thereafter is all it takes. I ocassionally do the 200 pushups in 20 minute workout and am usually struggling pretty well by the end, but I think 5 or 4 reps would dip below the threshold of causing significant fatigue. It's by no means a gimme, but I think you may be taking the worst of it. Reduce it to 90 minutes and the odds tilt heavily in your favor.

Update from the guy who did 1000 in 24 hours. It wasn't real hard because he never maxed out. But now he can't do 25 pushups at a time w/o pain. So he thinks he may have damaged something. So your buddy has that going for him.

Judging by everyone's confidence I am guessing its pretty easy to accomplish, but I am stronger then OP and I weigh less and I question how difficult it would be.

Max strength doesnt necessary translate to pushup endurance.

How bout 500 pullups in two hours?

This would obviously be a lot harder, and I'm betting that not very many could pull it off
