Default definition of a bad beat ?

i was having an argument with a friend and i said all that matters is when you got the money in. example you get AA vs. an A9 suited all in pre and the guy flops the nut flush, then you get the runner runner for the full house. you wouldn't say you put a bad beat on a nut flush guy right? only [censored] like set vs. overpair and hitting a two outer are bad beats.

I consider a bad beat to be when you get money in with the correct play and then lose it. I don't consider getting lucky then unlucky a bad beat because you were already beaten when you got the money in. I'm not sure if there's a proper set definition but thats my personal one

This is what Mike Caro says:

bad beat

(n phrase) The situation in which a strong hand is beaten by a longshot or improbable hand, particularly when the holder of the eventual winning hand should never have been in the pot in the first place (if playing correctly, at least by the reckoning of the loser of the pot).

I would say this was not a badbeat.

OP is not a bad beat. The hand that was ahead when the $ went in won. It would be a beat if the money had gone in on the flop if the AA then sucked out on the nut flush. your example is a suck/re-suck.

Here is a hand i consider a bad beat because pokerstove says my equity was 99,29% on the flop and still 95,45% on the turn:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.02 BB (8 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: 2+2 Forums)

UTG+1 ($0.53)
MP1 ($3.37)
MP2 ($9.29)
CO ($2.22)
Button ($1.11)
Hero ($4.61)
BB ($4.11)
UTG ($2.06)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
UTG calls $0.02, 1 fold, MP1 calls $0.02, 3 folds, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($0.08) 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (4 players)
Hero checks, BB checks, UTG checks, MP1 bets $0.1, Hero calls $0.10, BB folds, UTG calls $0.10.

Turn: ($0.38) J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (3 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets $0.1, MP1 folds, Hero raises to $0.3, UTG calls $0.20.

River: ($0.98) J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets $0.2, Hero calls $0.20.

Final Pot: $1.38

Results in white below:
UTG has Td Jd (full house, jacks full of sevens).
Hero has 7h Kd (full house, sevens full of kings).
Outcome: UTG wins $1.38.

That's not a bad beat, that's bad play.

If they were all-in on the flop or the turn, then it would be a bad beat.

Here's what you can go back at your friend with.

When you are all-in, say preflop like you said in your post, how does it matter what order of the cards come down? The guy with AA could just have easily flopped a full house and then the other guy could have made his meaningless nut flush on the river. What's the difference?
