If it's just a novelty thing you can get away with a lot less than $650. Just get a cheap road bike and swap out the handlebars. Should save you a few hundred.

THere's a thread in Health and FItness called "Getting into biking" that has some good info on it. I bought a flat bar road bike a while ago and while I initially loved it, 6 months later I'm really just wishing I got a real road bike [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I had an old flat bar bike for awhile that I used to get around town in college. I ripped the steerer tube apart in an intersection, and had to borrow a buddy's road bike for a few months. I preferred the flat bars: better cornering, easier to maneuver at slow speed, never hit shoes on the front tire.
