Have you ever contemplated suicide

I think I really never thought about killing myself. I do think about killing other people, a lot. Like every day. Not people I hate or something, just random people. Like, when talking to someone at work or in a store, I'm thinking "how would people react when i just slaughter this [censored] animal right on the spot?" You know, that kind of stuff.

I don't think I have ever very seriously thought about it, but when I was 18, my best friend died in a car accident. I found out when my buddy called me up at college to tell me and console me. I was devastated and heartbroken as I was pretty much in love with the girl for a while too.

Over the next few months I slipped in and out of serious depression from losing someone so close to me combined with the fact that it was only my 2nd month in college and I was so far away from home. I had thoughts pass through my mind from time to time about it, but I think the thought of actually going through with anything scared me more than anything.

Nothing can be so bad to make you do this. If you feel like this is your only path, reach out to those close to you. The harm you do to the people behind is far so horrible I can't even describe. I lost my friend three days ago. I don't know what to do.

I think a lot of people are missing the key point: you can't _imagine_ how it would _feel_ to be so depressed as to consider suicide, because your imagination is simply incalpable of doing it properly. Indeed you can't even remember it properly now even if in the past you DID feel that way. The only people who can tell you what its like are those actually super-depressed NOW. Daniel Gilbert (a psychology prof at harvard) has written a good book on this.

So to say 'I wouldn't commit suicide because of x/y (eg family)' is meaningless becuase its a rational thought generated in a non-super-depressed state, and however strongly you may think your imagination is calpable of predicting 'if I felt x then I would do y', your imagination is flawed (and this has been extensively demonatrated in studies).
