Re: David Wright for nl MVP?
[ QUOTE ]
There's no obvious choice here, but DW wouldn't be a bad one. At the risk of being overcome with EXCITEMENT!!!1!, however, I'm gonna pick Jose Reyes. Hanley Ramirez has been better in the batter's box than Reyes, but Reyes is far superior in every other respect, including his fielding at shortstop, which has been outstanding this season. As a tie-breaker (and ONLY as a tie-breaker), I'll give Reyes the nod due to playing meaningful games. Other players who wouldn't be terrible picks: - DW and Mig Cabrera: very similar. - Pujols: he's certainly been hot as of late and if the Cards somehow make the playoffs.... - Larry Jones: I hate him with a fiery Mets' passion, but you can't deny he's had a great year, albeit probably for naught. If DW hadn't gone 0-for-April, or if he ever learned how to make the throw from 3rd to 1st without putting it in the dugout, this would be a runaway for him, but then again, if Beltran hadn't been hurt in one way or another all year long, he'd be the one running away.... lotta ifs. [/ QUOTE ] Larry Jones for MVP! And if not, Reyes because he's played meaningful games. |

Re: David Wright for nl MVP?
I'm a Mets fan but I can't see Reyes or Wright getting this unless one of them went on a huge tear over the next couple of weeks, when Mets are playing their division rivals.
And Beltran hasn't had as good a year as either of them. |

Are SB/SBA included in the calculation for MLV/VORP? [/ QUOTE ] No, but they are included in EqA, which is probably the best measure of total, independent offensive value. And Wright is smoking Reyes in EqA, .325 to .286. Alou is at .309 and Beltran at .305. Stolen bases are massively overrated. |

Re: David Wright for nl MVP?
SBs weren't in the original MLV/VORP model, but they are now.
[ QUOTE ] Here are a few of VORP’s qualities: Factors in all components of run scoring – every hit, walk, stolen base, and out is incorporated into VORP when calculating a player or pitcher’s contribution, which allows for comparisons between players whose performance is completely different from each other. Re: David Wright for nl MVP?
Take Wright out of the lineup and the Mets aren't a playoff contender.
I agree that stolen bases are pretty overrated and Beltran isn't consistent enough to carry that team. I heard a stat the other day that something like half of Wright's home runs have come with the score tied. That's clutch. Wright gets the MVP is it goes to a Met, but if the Cards somehow get in it's gotta be Pujols... |

Stolen bases are massively overrated. [/ QUOTE ] Most people on these forums don't overrate steals. Besides that, speed is huge when you have that much of it. 20 steals type speed doesn't mean that much, but when you have game-changing, defense effecting speed like Reyes, it is rather huge. Speed is also underrated (by the masses) in the playoffs or any other low run environment. Also, the original question re: Wright was "does he have a chance/how realistic are his chances" to win MVP. The answer is no, not really. There are very few voters out there who would pick any Met over Reyes, and there are plenty of non-Mets with a way better shot. |
