He saves his tip money to buy those expensive hats he wears.

Americans have become so lazy with this "people owe me" mentality. Doing your job right should be the norm.

[/ QUOTE ]

Fine and well, but from the other side of the equation, it's also the norm that you pay for services. Whether it be primarily by tips or normal wages is besides the point. The cost of keeping poker rooms staffed is higher than the base wages paid by the casino - which, without tips, wouldn't even be legal since it's below the minimum wage.

Expecting good service, but not wanting to pay for it - doesn't that sound like the "people owe me" mentality you're talking about?

What? If Casino's just took care of the "tipping" for the customers, this whole mess wouldn't exist. Dealers would make a guaranteed rate for their services and would keep the bitching and moaning away from their customers. Oh, wait, that's exactly what happened in this tournament we're talking about.

Why is the tip customarily a % of the prize pool? Is it ten times harder to deal a $10k buy-in event than a $1k event?

Histroically it was (roughly). The $1k event woudl get $1k in chips and the $10k event would get 10 k in chips making it take about 10x the labor.

...etc. Yes I know, I made this point already. The problem is that casinos just aren't going to do this.

Also, it's just a convention, even it it is silly. Is it harder to serve a steak at a cheap diner than at an expensive, fancy restaurant? There's still the same general guidelines for tipping wait staff.

I bartended for 3 years, so I know all about the value of tips. But I've still never understood it. People are way too obsessive about when to tip, who to tip, how much to tip, etc. Quite frankly, it's gotten way out of hand.

Everywhere you go nowadays, people put out tip cups. It's become institutionalized pan-handling. I even read one article that detailed how much you should tip for carry-out. I mean, really....we're tipping for take-out now? I'm supposed to just blindly throw money into any cup or bucket because the word "Tips" is written on it? I don't see why I'm supposed to give you a little extra simply for doing your job. That's what your paycheck is for.

People need to remember that tipping is customary in America primarily for bartenders and waiters who make crappy wages. The only reason this is even the case is because the paying customers are, for some reason, willing to say to the owners of those establishments: "Don't bother paying your employees a fair wage; we'll just deliberately overpay our bill to compensate."

I've never understood it and I probably never will.

I would never tip in his spot. 3% was already taken out. That *was* the tip. He doesnt need to tip on top of that. Not that I would tip 3% to begin with, but nothing you can do if they force you to.

I think eventually this is where the trend is going, a lot more "mandatory 3%" tourneys.

If you're going to reply to my posts, Gonso, at least please quote me instead of someone else. I didn't say even one of the things you have me as quoted for. Thanks.
