If you waited up last night, saw that you'd hit the Mega Millions... and then found out the next morning that it was only 1/4 of what you thought you'd won, how disappointed would you be?

I would be disappointed initially, but a day or two later I'd be happy for what I won anyway.
I think it would suck to go to bed thinking "When I wake up I've got 200 mil" and then waking up "I only got 48 mil..I lost 150 mil overnight" but as I said, as time goes on (a day or two for me..months/years for others maybe) I'd adjust |

I could wake up and find I was one of 134 winners and still be able to retire.
Also, I wouldn't go to sleep that night either! |

don't people that win the lottery assume that they're splitting it?
I'd assume that, if I won, I'd be splitting with 2 others I guess that's still a bunch of millions - but still |

IIRC, this is one of the very few 200+M prizes that had multiple winners. |

You can calculate the expected share of the lottery from the number of tickets n and probability of winning with one ticket p, with the usual simplifying assumptions that people choose independently and uniformly. The probability that someone wins is 1-(1-p)^n. Your expected share from a ticket is (1-(1-p)^n)/n. So, your expected share conditional on winning is (1-(1-p)^n)/(np). You can determine the number of tickets sold between drawings in many lotteries by the increase in the pretax lump sum prize or by discounting the announced jackpot. Usually, about 25% of the ticket price goes into the jackpot. |
