Terrible Day. What should i do?
Background info:
1.I'm a student at U of Minnesota and I just moved into a new place a couple days ago. It's a house on campus with 14 people total. I didn't know anyone in the house prior to moving in, but everyone is really nice and seems really honest. 2. I bought a brand new moped about 2 months ago and I love it. Been having the time of my life riding it. Have a really thick (1 inch circumference) brinks lock for it and always lock it up. Events that transpired. 9/1 at 1pm. I lock my room to go to the card club and run into the (student) manager of the house on the way out of the house. He says that he is repairing room doors today because they need to close by themselves to get to code. I say thats fine that he fixes my door; just to lock up after he is done (I said this verbatim). I walk out of the house and glance at my moped, which is locked up to a thick post in front of the house in view of the street. 9/2 1am. Finish my worst session ever (down 3k, biggest loss to date for me) of cards and leave. 9/2 1:30am. Arrive at the house and start freaking out because I notice that my moped is no longer there. I look closer at the post and there is not anything related to my moped (no cut lock, no cut marks nothing, no trace of my moped/lock.) I go up to my room and notice that my room is unlocked and that my spare set of keys to my moped/lock are on my desk in plain view (i don't remember at all if I left them there or not). So a glimmer of hope enters my mind that the student manager had to move my moped for some reason. I then called him (he is at a bar) and ask him if he moved my moped. He says no, has no idea about what happened to it. So what should i do? Most people would say call the cops but here are the cons to that. CONS: 1. The cop might think that I'm just claiming stolen property because I lost a lot of money gambling (IDK, people judge any gamblers weird.) Thats why i avoid telling people I play poker, and I'd rather not have my house mates know i play poker. 2. It's gonna sound like I'm accusing my student manager to have a hand in the stealing when i explain the events that happened that night. 3. I am getting an amazing deal on this room ($300/month when everything equivalent is $500+) but its only month-to-month. So if I piss off the student manager too much he might kick me out. 4. Its unlikely that calling the cops will result in getting my moped back. So what are guys' thoughts on what I should do? |

[/ QUOTE ] Ok, this whole thread is weird, and I don't fully understand your living situation, but why would you tell the cops you lost $3k playing poker when you're reporting a stolen moped? Do you not have renter's insurance? Go back in time a week and get it. |

Well the cop would probably ask where I went, and after i say the casino; he might ask how it went (i have had 2 cops ask me this follow-up question after i got pulled over by a cop outside a casino). |

Do you not have moped insurance? Is there moped insurance? I've always wanted to kick the [censored] out of mopeds but I just assumed they'd be insured so it would be kind of pointless.

[/ QUOTE ] I had a roommate who'd get drunk and belligerent and trash mopeds. I'd tell him not to, but that was useless as he was drunk and belligerent. Besides, mopeds have no place in Madison, Wisconsin. As evidenced by OP, I think a lot of people don't have moped insurance. |
