It's not racist ban plz or anything, but people who aren't racist don't mention the race of the clerk nor do they transcribe what they said in amusing pidgin.

Mentioning race of someone in an anecdote when it's irrelevant is a really solid racism indicator.

It is relevant to the story. It would be very unusual for a non-imigrant to ask such a question. The fact that the clerk was not US born makes his question much more understandable.
