Default 10% rake beatable?

In my nearest cardroom they offer 2-4 limit (10% rake) and 5-10 limit (5%). I only have a bankroll for 2-4. Many people say that 10% rake is unbeatable, other say the opposite. I would like to know the truth before I sit down in an EV- game. I've read Small Stakes Holdem and my game is pretty solid I think but I do make some mistakes here and there. The 2-4 is supposed to be very loose.

Can I beat the game?

Is 10% rake beatable?..

Yeah, I've practically lived there. But never played poker, except on slots. Which we thought was beatable, so we went ahead and beat it. Of course that was rubbish, but we still did it. Huge profits from the poker slots. For like 2 weeks straight I went every single day, and won every single day. They did remove the machines. Maybe there was something wrong. We felt the royal flush paid too much and/or too often, so play was focussed on hitting it. Everything else we doubled to either 16 or 32 times. Fun times.

Cap is 10, and don't forget tips for the dealer...

I heard the 2/4 is very loose and the pots grow very big. So I think it's beatable, but not by much. 5/10 sounds a lot better with a rake of 5%.

Yep. That was some 8 years ago. (yes, I'm that old... lol) Because of that period I think overall I'm still ahead of the casino; probably won more than I lost over all times and all games. Then again my brother made up for the two of us...

I believe it's considered very bad gambling etiquette not to tip the dealer. Rude, even. Then again, I also don't tip at the roulette. I'm already knowingly playing a -EV game there; I see no need to tip employees who get paid fairly well in a place where you even have to buy your own drinks -- which, by the way, are fairly expensive to start with. In Vegas I imagine it may be different, with poorly paid staff and free drinks at the table.

If the rake is capped at 10, they should be paying the dealers, and you shouldn't need to tip them. I don't know the etiquette there, but if I remeber correctly, the rake in Australia was pretty high, but the dealers were paid a reasonable base salary, so you didn't tip them.

i don't think so...read this

one needs to play at higher stakes i guess...perhaps automated tables will someday make rake affordable to low limit games, but with potential revival of on-line poker play, i doubt casino's will want to risk investing in the machinery...
