Blitz, assuming you know my background here, would you object to me dating your daughter based on that alone?

[/ QUOTE ]
Not quite sure what you mean about your background.
Within my sort of religious community most couples meet through blind dates set up in any number of ways.
Parents to parents is a very rare case. In most cases it is friends that do it.

And one more point - she already has a bf.

[/ QUOTE ]

assuming she didn't have a BF:

I have a Masters in Communication Arts
I own my own home
Never married but would love to be
love kids
close to my family
honest and loyal

oh yeah, and I used to produce and direct adult films.

(I'm also 44 and no doubt too old for your daughter)

But assuming I was fifteen years younger, knowing what you know now, would you object to your daughter dating me?

[/ QUOTE ]
Still think that at 29 you would be a bit old for her.

The being Jewish part is a go/no-go rule.

[ QUOTE ]
So, you really live in Israel?

[/ QUOTE ]
Yes. Been here for the last 25 years. Would swap it for the world.

[ QUOTE ]
"Religious" would not describe them, unless drinking and cursing is tolerable in the Jewish Community.

[/ QUOTE ]
Well, drinking wine is central to almost all Jewish ceremonies.

[ QUOTE ]
They had a very odd sense of humor. I guess the word would be macabre, meaning obsessed with the dark side. For example, one was driving, and I was talking about where we were going. He says, "as long as we make it." This seems different.

[/ QUOTE ]
We generally have a weird sense of humour here. I think it is because of the number of people killed in wars and on the roads. Classic case of black humour.

[ QUOTE ]
How do you feel about Islam and it's practitioners?

[/ QUOTE ]

As I have mentioned earlier, I believe in respecting everyone else's beliefs. However, if that belief includes killing me then that's where I have to draw the line.

[ QUOTE ]
How do you place women and children, and how does that contrast with your religion?

[/ QUOTE ]
Contrary to what people think we don't think women are lesser in value than men. We just think that we each have a task in the world that we are better at. Generally, women are better at raising kids. Since this is THE single most important job in a family it seems logical that they should concentrate their time on that.
With that said, my wife is a full time teacher and has been for over 25 years.

[ QUOTE ]
Do you wear all black?

[/ QUOTE ]
Not the sort of black you mean. I do wear a dark suit to the Synagogue on the Sabbath but that is just because I want to look smart. Most of my neighbours just wear a smart pair of trousers and a white shirt.

[ QUOTE ]
What value do you place on education?

[/ QUOTE ]
Education is the ONE most important thing in life besides the religion itself. As the Talmud says "A father who doesn't teacher his son a profession it is as if he is teaching him to steal".
In fact, we moved to where we live now so that we could live next to the school where we wanted our kids to learn.
I wanted them to stay at home and not go into dormitory.

[ QUOTE ]
And what values do you place on having a job vs. self-employment.

[/ QUOTE ]
I am actually self-employed. I work in computer software.

[ QUOTE ]
How do you balance that with work, and do you encounter problems because of it?

[/ QUOTE ]
The morning and evening prayers are before/after work. The afternoon one varies depending on the season. It can be said any time from midday to sunset.
It is also by far the shortest. It was set this way specifically because it falls within work time.
Nevertheless, according to religious law, if the employer refuses to give the employee time off to pray then he can not pray - simple as that.

[ QUOTE ]
Given that you come from a less religious family, what motivated you to become more serious about your religion?

[/ QUOTE ]
To be honest I am not 100% sure. I am sure that some of it was peer pressure but I always knew I would become more religious even when I was 8 or 9.

[ QUOTE ]
How does your family (parents and siblings) feel about your adherence to your faith?

[/ QUOTE ]
We are an amazingly cosmopolitan family. We range from the very religious (me) through the not quite so down to the completely secular.
we all get on fine. The one thing that is a problem is that I can't eat in one of my sister's house. People might find that harsh but she respects it 100%.

[ QUOTE ]

Also, what do you think about people who were not brought up Jewish at all but who convert? Do you distrust them? Do you think they are less serious than yourself? Would it be ok if your daughter married a converted Jew?

[/ QUOTE ]

Judaism does not actively go out to convert and, in fact, we go out of our way to dissuade possible convertees. However, if someone does convert they are treated like any other Jew and, in most cases, even better. Being a religious Jew is not easy. So someone who converts out of choice has my deepest respect.

I would have absolutely no problem whatsoever with any of my children marrying a convert.

Depends by what you call "care".
I wouldn't like to tell my friends that my son-in-law makes porn movies. However, that is a side point rather than a main, central trait. I would be a bit more converned if you were a drug dealer.

Hi blitz,

I don't know much about religion. I went to a Catholic Elementary school, from grades 1-8 and I did not learn or believe much. I also read SMP frequently and have come to a basic, humble understanding of Christianity. I know very little about Judaism, however. This might sound like a strange request, so don't feel obligated to answer if you don't want to But I'd like to here a little summary on your part about what Judaism is like. For instance, a "moderate Christian" might summarize his faith as:

The Bible teaches us the "best" way to act. Simple, comfortable, and helpful to humanity. The path, a person's journey in life, is a transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Jesus is a character, maybe or maybe not based on a real person in real life, and is an "ideal person" under the Christian faith. We Christians try to act like Jesus, and some of his basic characteristics are (x).

Eh, now that I read it that sounds kind of korny. Anyhow, I'm interested in any kind of effective rendition/summary of Judaism that you could offer a noob.

I have heard a rabbi describe Judaism as being both a race and a religion. On the other hand, when I posed the question to a Jewish friend of mine, he was very offended. I mean no offense and am just curious, is there an official position?
