Re: Best Films of the 21st Century
I think every movie that I would include in my top 10 has been pointed out and accurately portrayed in this thread. A couple honorable mentions I would include would be Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Sam Rockwell is brilliant as Chuck Barris and it has that perfect morbid comedy in every moment that gives it a lot of rewatch value for me. Another favorite of mine was Mystic River. The pain of all 3 characters is so perfectly crafted on screen that you can almost feel it in every moment of the movie. These two would round out my additions to an otherwise fantastic list.

Re: Best Films of the 21st Century
Two standout films - but they are poles apart. What they have in common is stunningly good performances
1. The Worlds Fastest Indian - this is a gem. The story is simple, yet inspiring and the performance of Sir Anthony Hopkins in his portrayal of Burt Munro is perfect. 2. Sexy Beast - Ben Kingsley as Don Logan and Ray Winstone as Gal . |

2. Sexy Beast - Ben Kingsley as Don Logan and Ray Winstone as Gal . [/ QUOTE ] Agreed. I happened upon this movie on IFC a couple of years ago, and was hooked from the opening scene when the rock falls into the pool. Also, and movie with music by the Stranglers in it gets a thumbs up from me. |

Re: Best Films of the 21st Century
This is a fantastic thread, and I forget how I need to go to the Lounge MUCH much more
I'm working on my film critiquing and am going to do my top 10 list (which will look similar, but of course slightly different that those in this thread) and share it when I get home But more than anything this thread makes me realize that I need to watch a lot more movies! I think of myself as a movie person, but there are unfortunately a few flicks in this thread I haven't even heard of Anyway, if you are concerned about traffic, just keep good threads like these going with professional dialogue about hobbies/desires/passions and I will definitely be here early and often |

Re: Best Films of the 21st Century
One film that has been ignored thus far is Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto". The tremendous art direction and attempts at historical authenticism through language is a unique achievement. Similar comments apply to The Passion. I rewatched some clips of Apocalypto the other day and thought it held up real well to a repeat viewing. I'm sure it will continue to do so in the future.

[ QUOTE ] One question. I found Maggie Cheung to be sexier and more erotic completely clothed in essentially the same style dress than any actress in any movie ever (including porn movies, although, ahem, I'm not much for that sort of thing). Somehow the subtlety did it for me. Did she do it for you? ~ Rick [/ QUOTE ] I think if she didn't do it for me I'd either be gay or dead. In a word, ravishing. [/ QUOTE ] I was about to send this back to Netflix but gave it to a very close friend who will probably watch it with his wife. His wife will only watch G or PG rated, no violence, no swearing, no sex type movies with very wholesome type themes. I previously recommended "Amelie" and she sort of failed the "litmus test" you mention in the OP ("Annie Hall" used to be the litmus test movie for me). Anyway if this isn't wholesome enough I will give up suggesting movies to her for life. As an aside I noticed my friend John Cole is talking about Before Sunrise and Before Sunset elsewhere. I'll probably watch the first tonight and the other in a few days. I'll try to post my thoughts (to the extent I have worthwhile thoughts ) if I can find time. ~ Rick |

Someone that wholesome is easily scarier than your garden variety degenerate.

8. Maria Full of Grace [/ QUOTE ] I loved this movie. There is an old thread here were it was briefly discussed. That thread mentions another more detailed thread which I can't find. Anyway, maybe not in the top ten but worth renting. ~ Rick |
