I can see Freddie Mercury being famous... but not quite icon status.

[/ QUOTE ]
Really, because I think he is one of our definitive rock star "icons".

And even if a lot of people don't know who Lenny Bruce is, his place at the pinnacle of his profession, as one of its very best and most influential, I think almost by definition makes him not just "kinda" famous.

I grant that I know who a hell of a lot more people are than most people do, but when I think "kinda famous", I think... Peter Tomarken, not Lenny Bruce.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with all that except the icon status of Freddie.... I really think most of America lives in today. I guarauntee more people knew about Britney shaving her head, or Lohan going to jail, than could name the VP of the US. I guess I really think most of America is dumb, and the fact that new kids on the block sold more records than a million better bands kinda supports where i'm coming from. 2+2 is way more informed than most... but enuff with my contempt for the masses. I just wish Freddie was still around. I will agree he was more than "kinda famous", but he still deserves a mention.

My final nomination is Carol O'conner.... Of course older folks remember him as Archie Bunker. No one could pull the loveable dumb bigot off like he did. Yes, he was famous, ecspecially in the late 70s, but damn, that show did not air long enuff..... I guess I should be glad it never "jumped the shark".

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd have to say the episode where the guy comes into the house to RAPE EDITH had a little flying Fonzie in a life preserver feel to it.

[/ QUOTE ]

shut up you pinkie commie meathead! (kidding)

I musta missed that one. I was young back then, but I try to catch the reruns on TVland as much as possible. It makes me sad such a good show jumped the shark.

John Holmes, AKA Johnny Wad, AKA Long John Silver... never saw him in action, probably good for my self esteem though.

Whatever, guys, I got it perfectly with the first response. JT Walsh isn't too famous, and just try to watch Pleasantville or A Few Good Men or something without wishing that guy was still around.

[/ QUOTE ]

You were doing so well and then you mentioned those two movies.

Let's try again: The Grifters and Sling Blade.

[/ QUOTE ]
Those movies are, you know, "kinda famous," I wanted to name some stuff people (that didn't already recognize his name) are likely to have heard of and seen. And come on, you can't say ol' JT was bad in them, either.
