Yes, the gay community is actually pretty splintered:
There is definitely a trendy, high-profile, flamboyant younger crowd (these are the ones that make it onto tv in basically the gay version of white face). They often look down on anyone who isn't as waxed, toned, etc as they are.
There is the bear community which is basically your average joe guy, chubby guys, blue-collar guys, hairy guys, etc. They tend to look down on mainstream gay culture, and what the consider to be posturing by the above super-trendy crowd, etc etc etc.
So basically, just like the sub-sections of straight society, they tend to be disdainful towards those who aren't in, or at least comfortable around their subsection.
I'm cool with pretty much any subsection, although it is true that I'm not that into the super-trendy scene because I'm not flamboyant. You probably wouldn't guess I'm gay unless I told you although I've been 100% openly so for several years.
