jogging w/ heart monitor, why do i suck?
How come guys at work, who are my age, tell me they jog for 30-45 min without getting their heart rate over 155 yet my heart rate goes to like 160 after 20 min even going 5mph. Is this just because I'm not as fit as they are? My resting heart rate is <60, and i've been working out for a while but i never used to growing up. Any idea what the deal is?

Re: jogging w/ heart monitor, why do i suck?
There's a great deal of variation in heart rate due to genetics. It may correlate with fitness, but that doesn't tell anything about an individual. Frank Shorter's resting heart rate was supposedly 75 or something as surprising. Age is also a factor.

just a guess, but if they have been doing that kind of aerobic activity for a long time then their bodies have adapted well to it and it no longer taxes them...but if you are new to it then it will be more challenging...

[/ QUOTE ] if they dont wear a heart rate monitor u cant really take there word. Doing 160/170s heartrate in a 10 mile run can b done without stressing it really much. It doesn't mean your out of shape I am almost always at least 160 170 unless I am really goig real easy then my heart rate goes 150s or below. Been jogging about 3yr. Heart rate doesn't really matter in this comparison. Do you compete in running? |

Re: jogging w/ heart monitor, why do i suck?
I have a crazy-weird heart rate. I rowed in college, and when we did off season running stuff, my hr would look something like: run on flat surface, 135-140, run up hill, 155-160, sprint up stairs, 195+. Anyway, you need to figure out your own max hr and then figure out the %s from there, that will give you a better idea of where you are at. Don't compare it to others, compare it to your max.

OP,
Stop jogging. Start running. Your body will adapt fast. |

Re: jogging w/ heart monitor, why do i suck?
I wouldn't be too concerned. There is a ton of information out there regarding HR Training. If you are interested, I would suggest doing a lactate thershold (or similar) test to determine your HR zones. Then you can train in specific zones for specific workouts.
You will see improvement -- i.e. you can run faster at a similar HR. A great book on the subject...Total Heart Rate Training by Friel |
