Default Etiquette Question

In a heads up tournament, is it acceptable to say: "I think I am probably going to have to fold this" as part of table talk [without mucking hand], and then raise all in?
Is mentioning the word 'fold' effectively a mucking of a hand?

It's not unethical, but it's a bit risky as if you word it badly in the heat of the moment, the floor may rule it a verbal action.

I think thats acceptable. You are just saying a comment, theres a difference between "I think I should fold this hand" and "I fold this hand".

Just my 2c.

At our home games (micro just for fun) the rule is the cards have to touch the muck for it to be a fold so anything you say doesn't matter. At a casino it might be dicey but I agreed with the above post.

I would suggest avoiding the word "fold", just in case. Instead maybe, "I don't think I can play these" as you look at your hand.

I was in a hand heads-up when the flop came with 3 hearts. Both of us picked up our hole cards to see if we had any, and I chuckled and commented, "both of us check to see if we have a heart...." Opponent checked and it was ruled I had checked verbally also, so I lost the chance to semi-bluff my K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. Harsh, I thought, but not worth the argument at a friendly home game.

Moral of the story: take the words Fold, Check, Raise, Call, etc. out of your table-talk vocabulary and only use them for hand actions. Come up with alternatives like "I feel a win-or-go-home moment coming" if you want to threaten a big re-raise to buy yourself a free card, etc.

If someone wants to make an issue out of it, your hand probably gets killed the majority of the time at a casino.

Yep. When the floor is called over everyone at the table will remember hero said fold. However, they will disagree on the exact words used and context, but will all agree hero used the word "Fold." Why set yourself up for this no win situation?

Is it really worth the risk? I doubt you saying this will get a call, if anything it will give away your strong hand. If you're doing this with a weak hand, the times he calls he beats you so there will be no complaint.
