Default x-post: playing AA for equity

an interesting post was made in medium stakes this morning.

its a loose, live full game. a tight player opens utg. you're next in with AA. in this game people respect 3 bets but probably not 2. ever consider just calling the UTG raise and "maximizing" your equity edge?

(ps according to Med Stakes OP, this was on Ed Miller's DVD)

Yeah, Ed also advocates giving the two blinds a free flop because you want action with AA. (ie. all fold to you in CO with AA, you limp) I've always questioned that. And now the AA cold call... I'd rather have him cap kings and lead into me post flop, than having to worry about the 2 cold callers behind me who may or may not hold QTs for the straight.

I think that Ed Miller makes a good case for this and the play is most likely +EV, though, I am not sure that this was the exact scenario on the cd. Unfortunately, I seem to be unable to not raise here, but I'm working on it.

I asked Death Donkey in the current if there was ever a time he likes to limp or just call with big pairs in a mid or high game. I didn't ask him about AA specifically but here is his reply:

"UTG or UTG+1 in a full ring tough or squeaky tight limit game. That's about it, though I've seen good players do the smoothcall in the SB vs a late position raiser etc. I just never do it, maybe I'll start someday".

I've never done it in LHE but I do it in spread limit semi-frequently.

I will limp in in loose game early with AA hoping for a raise so I can re-raise. You have to be to be willing to dump your AA or pay off a better hand if you fail. It can be real sweet when it works well.

I like to win with AA. Therefore I always raise it in any position.

i dont care about winning pots. i care about winning money.

if playing it this way makes more money, then we should play it this way.

I completely agree. I find that people who get tricky with Aces tend to lose more money with them. I always raise because I like money. My post should read "I like money, therefore I raise with Aces preflop in any position."

I like playing my Aces at least 3-way so somone has a good chance to catch enough of the board to call me down.
