Take the exact same riddle, but choose different numbers for the refund. Instead of $5 make it $10, with the bellhop giving the men $9 to split and keeping $1 for himself.

Each man has paid $7, for a total of $21. The bellhop has $1. Where's the extra $8?

The reason the riddle works is that numbers end up being so close. The question doesn't actually make sense, though, which is clear once you use different numbers.

Yes, they each paid 9. 9x3 = 27. Why would you add the 9 they paid to the bellboy's 2?

Look at it this way
9x3 (what they paid) =
25 + 2 (hotel + bellboy)

I can't believe I bothered to read this whole thing. I was originally going to post an obvious explanation, but it's clear that's pointless. And the whole coffee/milk bucket thing is retarded, too. The bucket seal isn't funny either.

However, the extra face tendon thing is actually quite clever and made me laugh.

The extra $1 is ovbiously some sort of surcharge for the level of gayness in 3 friends sharing the same room.

This is old, I heard this for the first time when I was like 14 and figured it out pretty fast.

The problem in the math is you are counting the $2's twice.

When you say $27 + $2 that's erroneous, because the $27 already includes the $2

Total Cost to the Dudes = $27 ($25 room + $2 pocket)

I think I got leveled
