What to Do with Pocket Aces on Flop?
$5-10 NLHE Cash Game (live at casino)
9 Players with average stack size of about $1,500. TheMan (Stack: $1380) I'm dealt: A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Player A: Calls UTG (Stack: $2,500) Player B: Calls 2nd UTG ($Stack: $600) Player C: Folds Player D: Folds TheMan: Raises to $100 (pot now $135) ...everyone else fold back to Player A. He thinks for about 20 sec and calls. Player B folds. Pot now $225, so I say "$300 in the dark".....which makes the pot $525. FLOP: 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] K [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Player A: moves all-in (has me covered) TheMan: (Stack: $980) ***With $525 in the pot, I have to call off all my chips with a huge over pair to the board and a backdoor nut flush draw. My opponent knew that I bet $300 in the dark and then went into the tank for about 5 minutes before announcing his all-in. Being it was the first time I'd played with this older gentlemen, I didn't know what to make of his AI push. Did he have A-K? ...I didn't put him on two pair, because of the board. I didn't feel he'd call me $100 preflop with any two pair on that board. I thought about a set, which would make sense, but also felt like it was too big of a bet. Given that I'd bet $300 in the dark before the flop, he probably would've put me on AA, KK, QQ. ...If so, why bet so much with a set? Did he have a flush draw with TP? That could be a possibility. ..... What would you have done here? -TheMan |

Re: What to Do with Pocket Aces on Flop?
1) I realize unorthodox things occur all the time live, but I'm not sure I understand betting well over the pot size in the dark. You are announcing that you have the goods and are inviting your opponent to take the lead in the hand on any board that might be scary for an overpair.
2) His bet really isn't that much. He can't really make any other raise without getting you essentially all in, so he might as well shove. 3) As played this is probably AK or diamonds too often to fold once you've invested $400 of a $1400 stack. Sets are tough for him to have here, I doubt this is 44 very often. 77/KK, possible. TP with flush draw is tough unless it's KdQd or KdJd. I'd make what is admittedly a thin call. |

I'd call... Why did you bet dark? [/ QUOTE ] LOL...great question. That was the thing people said was odd...But the answer is that I'd been playing since 6PM that night and it was now close to 2:30AM and I wanted to make it my last hand and go home with a profit. I thought the guy was weak pre-flop and probably not likely to hit flop, so I wanted to take down the pot quickly with a strong bet. -TheMan |

BTW, I called and he turned over KK. Turn came J (Diamonds), giving me backdoor nut flush draw. ..River a blank. I go home, ironically...with zero bucks.
