Just read this whole thread, its awesome.

If you travel around with poker and what not people get sick impressed like "YOU WENT TO SINGAPORE TO PLAY POKER?! ZOMG!"

I think its easier for tournament guys because people see it on TV and it seems more glamorous and there's "big money" involved.

Oh, i've also gotten the whole "if i give you 300 dollars can you turn into XXX for me?"

I very calmly and seriously look at them and say "if you can come up with $10,000, then we can talk."

I just tell people that I am a degenerate gambler and then we all have a good laugh at my gambling problem.

I just ordered the 32" tv from the fpp store on stars and my mom asked me how much I had to pay for it. This was the basic conversation.

mom: how much money did that cost you?
me: (explanation of earning fpps)
mom: you obviously can't win if they take money from the pot everytime you win a hand
me: lol
mom: I hope they don't take the money out of your account for it
me: ummm...they won't thats not how it works
mom: ok, well I hope they deliver it and you didn't get ripped off

I just don't tell people because most think it's compulsive gambling.

Talking about poker is ultra boring even with someone who is knowledgeable about the subject.

This is my default answer to where the money comes from:

When u flip a coin u have a 50/50 chance to win/lose.
If u play for $1/flip and you flip about 100 times you'll be close to +/- 0.

All i do is searching for people who pay me $2 when i win the flip but only want $1 if they win.

9/10 people understand it.

This is a very good analogy that I'll try to keep in mind next time anybody gives me [censored].

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe the people I talk to are just [censored] at math, but whenever I try the simple +EV coinflip analogy, I end up with nods and then a follow-up "Ok, but still you should quit before you lose it all." Trying to explain to someone like this that your RoR is not 100% in a +EV game is pointless.

i hate these " i hate tellin people i play poker professionally" threads. BS you LOVE telling people you play poker professionally. Its a very cool thing to be able to tell people. Theres something about being great at a card game that just makes you feel so bada**, and u know it.
