If you want to try some non-fiction, but still want a good story and an entertaining, educational read, try Bernard DeVoto's edit of the Journals of Lewis and Clark.

or, on the fiction side of things, give "No-No Boy" by John Okada a shot. though it's the story of a post-WWII japanese-american who went to prison for refusing the draft and his struggle to re-enter society, it's themes are more concerened about the interaction of racial factors and the democratic ideals and the effects of the war on those relationships... it's insights and observations apply well to today's political climate.

I just finished Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel and now I'm currently working on his newer book, Collapse. Pretty interesting stuff from a Pulitzer winner.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Went out and bought Catch 22, The Botany of Desire, and On the Genealogy of Morality by Freidrich Nietzsche (suggested by this girl im seeing).

A good thing about The Botany of Desire is that you don't have to read each section to enjoy it. The Apple and Marijuana chapters are the best, IMO.

I'd also add The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay if you were into comic books and Houdini stuff as a kid. I also second whoever mentioned The Life of Pi.

All you Stephenson fans may want to check out Zodiac. It's one of his earlier books and not as solid as Snow Crash or Cryptonomicon but still a good read.

I stongly recommend East of Eden by John Steinbeck. That is by far my faviorite book in a long time. I wasn't a fan of Grapes of Wrath, so do not let that influence your opinon of the book.
