Re: Blackjack basic strategy - comments from other players at table
Tell the idiot that he has to buy your bet if he wants to tell you how to play it. 12 vs. 3 is pretty -EV, as I recall, so if he takes you up on it, it's to your advantage. I wouldn't even mention basic strategy. All the clowns at the table know that's just something the casinos invented to make them play wrong.

Re: Blackjack basic strategy - comments from other players at table
basic strategy is strictly for the player against the house. someone could split t's double down on 18 and stay on a 7 all day long and it would have NO effect on your results. I am so amazed that even the dealers do not understand this.

Then one of the players asked if I was going to cover everyone's bets if I got a ten and took away the dealer's bust card (I thought to myself WTF!). [/ QUOTE ] This would be enough to set me off for real. I'd say something like "are you going to suck my [censored] if I stick it in your face" or at the very least "[censored] no, why would I?" Seriously, he's wrong in so many ways that it's disgusting and then he's acting all pissy at you for not being wrong along with him. I'm usually pretty mild-mannered, but if this guy said this with the self-righteous manner that I'm imagining, it would be enough to make me really really angry. |

I am so amazed that even the dealers do not understand this. [/ QUOTE ] Most people at the blackjack table (including many dealers) simply do not grasp probability. Their idea that a bad player "screws up the cards" or "takes the dealer's bust card" is based solely on selective hindsight. When they lose, and they can see that if the third base player had stood instead of hit, the dealer would have busted, they blame the third base player. Rarely do they notice when the third base player's action helps them. I remember one time when I had a 16 and the player to my right had an 11, with the dealer showing a ten-value card. I correctly hit the sixteen, drawing a 10 and busting, and the player to my right doubled down and drew a 5. The dealer had a pat hand (20 I think but I don't remember for sure) and we both lost. The player to my right was quit angry with me. The fact that had the order of those two cards been reversed, it would have worked perfectly for both of us, and that there was no way of knowing that beforehand was completely lost on him. All he knew was that I had taken "his" ten and "caused" him to lose his double down. |

If you dont like dealers then stay home and shut the hell up. Just sad how pathetic some people are. [/ QUOTE ] The comments many of us make are not because we don't "like" dealers -- it's simply that they are generally the worst source of information for the games they deal. Every now and then someone comes along who either is a dealer or sources a dealer as an expert -- at which point dealers, as a group, get deservedly bashed. If you read investment topics, I'm sure you'll find the same treatment for stock brokers -- for much the same reasons. Don't take it personally. |

Re: Blackjack basic strategy - comments from other players at table
Fair enough point about the stock broker comparison.
However to say that dealers are generally the worst source is a little harsh. A few are dumb as a box of rocks but to say generally speaking is a little much. There are a lot worse people that you could get info from. Its kind of like this site. I sit down and read posts here and well over half are just plain ignorant. I would never say 2 + 2 is generally the worst site to get info because of that since ive picked up some good information here. My only point is that because a few dealers are morons doesnt mean that generally they all are. Thats it no big deal |

Re: Blackjack basic strategy - comments from other players at table
In my experience, a large number of dealers don't know basic strategy well, but are more than willing to give out unsolicited bad advice at the table.
I have the utmost respect for a dealer who doesn't know or care to know basic strategy, but doesn't advise players on strategy, even when asked. What kills me are the dealers who actively discourage players from doubling 10v2 or 11v8 when the player is hesitating, deciding whether or not to double. If I had to take a wild stab at categorizing dealers ... I would say that 15% know basic strategy reasonably well 15% don't offer advice at all 40% will give bad advice when asked 30% will give unsolicited bad advice |
