For starters, screen size is typically measured corner-to-corner. However, size is irrelevant to your question...resolution is what matters.

Monitors with 1600 x 1200 resolution will fit 4 tables without overlaping or resizing - Dell & Samsung make 20" monitors with that resolution. To fit more than that requires going to a much larger (and much more expensive) monitor - probably around 30".

Of course, many players either live with some overlap, play at sites with resizeable or mini tables, or cascade them.

Regardless of how you do it, the higher your resolution, the more you'll fit on your monitor.

depends on which site you are playing too...

For PS and FTP with a 22" 1680*1050 resolution you can fit 6 tables comfortably or 9 tables with a very small overlap..if you need more go with a bigger one...if not the samsung 226bw is realtively cheap and will do the job just fine...

I always thought everyone just shrinked down their tables. I always wondered how they could even see whats going on.

that true...its quite difficult if you are not right in front of the monitor to distinguish clearly with 9 tables on FTP..on PS its a bit more comfortable..however you will be fine with 4 tables on FTP sitting up to 1 metre away

Not at all. Like I said, resize or overlap for some. I have 2 - Samsung 20" monitors so I could play 8 tables full size with no overlap...a fairly common setup. A few have that plus a 30", which allows them something like 16 tables.
