Also, it's psychological. I don't want a K or Q to come on the turn, and then force me into a difficult decision, knowing I might have the best hand, but also that I'll probably face another bet on the river. Raising gets him to check, so I can check behind, without having to play any guessing games on the turn.
Also, checking behind could get him to bet the river with a hand he wouldn't call the turn with. |

Well, the turn check is not for pot control or pot size control, it's because you are likely beat. Before raising on the flop you need to consider what you are trying to accomplish. You want the opponent to make mistakes. Calling when ahead is effective pot size control.
