HU Tourney Question
My loosely-formed league wants to have a HU tourney. Pretty sure we could fill a 16 player tourney, but don't want to do a 32 player tourney. Anything in between requires that some players get a bye for the first round. Has anyone every played in a HU tourney with first-round byes? Seems very unfair to me to be one of the players without a first-round bye.

Re: HU Tourney Question
I have played one with byes. I think there were around 20 players and I happened to be one of the unlucky who did not get a bye. The tournament worked out okay but it is pretty unfair to have to win one more than the rest and I wouldn't play this structure again.
There are ways to have double elimination tournaments that are fair given a player count that is not 16 or 32. If you do a little digging you can probably find those formats. |

Re: HU Tourney Question
You could always have those who dont get a bye paying half the buy in.

Re: HU Tourney Question
How about auctioning off the bye's. Put the extra money in the prize pool.

Re: HU Tourney Question
My group (www.nyhomepoker.com) is doing one next weekend. We also considered 24 players. But I was convinced that it wasn't worth the hassle and the unfairness of it. Unless there is a compelling reason to have more than 16 or less than 32 I would recommend not doing it.
You can auction off byes, or rank byes or give out random byes. Either way, it's unfair for a player to get a bye. especially if it's just a friendly home game. here's a good site for information. http://www.homepokertourney.com/heads-up.htm franco |
