How to disable UPnP in Vista?
Somebody started a thread a year or so ago about how to protect oneself from hackers, and he said it was extremely important to disable UPnP, or Universal Plug and Play, but I can't figure out how to do it on Vista. I've been referred to a piece of software that does it (UnPnP) but it's old and I don't think it works with Vista. Do I even need to worry about it with Vista? Any help is much appreciated.

Re: How to disable UPnP in Vista?
It's a service like anything else. Just right click my computer---manage---services. It's labeled as universal plug and play. Double click it and change the startup type to disabled.

Re: How to disable UPnP in Vista?
start menu -> right click computer -> click "manage" -> services and applications -> services -> double click "UPnP Device Host" -> set "Startup Type" to "Disabled" -> click "OK"
never heard of this being necessary. that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. but are you sure you didn't read that you should disable UPnP on your router? that would make more sense to me. to do that, you probably need to go to http://192.168.1.1/ and look for the setting to disable. check the manual for your router. realize that some applications (like uTorrent, for example) like to use this feature. |
