9,000 hands at $0.02 poker stars
Hello all. I'm writing primarily to let off some steam, hopefully this will be cathartic for me. I've played 9,000 hands at $0.01/$0.02 on poker stars, always full ring with 9 players. I have very slowly grinded out a profit of $36.19 over the course of these hands making my bb/100 at 10.33/100. Is this good bad or ugly?
I feel very disappointed in myself. I am a high achiever academically and I thought I would be destroying these games. I know all the basics (pot odds) I don't go on tilt and I'm not chasing massive pots with just top pair. But I still don't seem to be winning much. My vpip is 14 and my pre flop raise is 5. My flop agression is 2.5. My turn agression is 2. And my river agression is 3. The only thing I think I am not doing is the check raise, I have only done it less than 1% of the time. I don't know where I'm going with this. Hope to get a response before I go to bed. |

Re: 9,000 hands at $0.02 poker stars
10.33/100 is pretty solid. i would be happy with that even at these limits. i dont know much about full ring, but a pre flop rasing % of 5 seems a little passive/tight. ive never played these limits so that could be good or bad to be tight.
i wouldnt worry too much abuot c/r'ing, seems at those limits all you have to do be bet/lead with the best hand and get paid off. you seem to be doing good, just opening up your rasing range in position and you shuold be fine. keep it up |

Re: 9,000 hands at $0.02 poker stars
10.33/100 is solid. I know $36 doesn't sound like much, but you're playing for pennies. So think of it as $3600 if you were playing for dollars! I know it's not the same, but that's a very solid profit playing for so little. If you can afford it, move up a little bit and maybe that will be more gratifying as the win rate may go down slightly in terms of BB/100, but the $$ amount may increase as long as you continue to play well. Don't get down on yourself while you're winning, if you do you won't last very long. Remember, no matter how much smarter or better you are then your opponents, it's still gambling and they still will turn over the best hands sometimes. One of the things I have learned is that card knowledge is only a small part of playing cards profitably. The most important aspect is being able to manage and control emotions, frustrations, and your bankroll.

You are up almost 20 buy-ins. I'm not sure what the problem is since you are winning. You expect to be winning more? You aren't going to get rich at .01/.02

Re: 9,000 hands at $0.02 poker stars
You are ahead money wise and by no means doing badly. Playing full ring is less profitable than 6max and playing a TAG game is less profitable (but much easier to play) than a LAG at these limits. If you are expecting to make a living playing 1 cent 2 cent then you are mistaken, but what you have done so far is very good.
Keep practicing and trying new things, once you get to the point where you know what your opponents have by the river I say move up to 25NL providing you have a high enough bank roll. I don't think there is any difference from .01/.02 and .05/.10 because all the players suck at these limits so if you want a chance to make more money then try moving up. Without seeing any other stats of yours the one thing I recommend is increasing your range of raising hands preflop. |

I play FR too. You should open Your range to at least 16% I think. agression should be higher ofcourse. 10/100 is a very nice result I think. Move as soon as possible to NL10. Cheers and good luck to You.

OP, the responses in this thread are really sensible.
i'd add that you should consider moving to six max. in terms of judging your WR, 9k hands is not a lot. also, you won't be stuck at 1/2c forever - i've gone from having a 1/2c br to having a 25/50c br (although at 25nl for now). best of luck. |

Re: 9,000 hands at $0.02 poker stars
Thanks for the replies. I read them this morning before I started my first session and they put me in a positive frame of mind. I am delighted to learn I have a sufficient win-rate. Looking back at yesterday I think it was the worst day so far in my short poker career... I suffered the usual bad beats AA getting cracked after an all in pre flop by KJ etc etc. Today it has gone from my worst day to my best day so far, I've made over $8.00 thanks to 4 big hands and lots of small ones. And my bb/100 has risen to 12.01/100 so I am in a good mood. I must be careful though, I experienced "tilt" for the first time today and it cost me $2.50... lesson learned.
Oh and from the get go today I loosened up my pre-flop strategy a little bit and also raised more frequently in later position. Hopefully the poker gods ae on my side and this will continue over the next few days... another $20 and I can move up. |

Re: 9,000 hands at $0.02 poker stars
As said above, you're doing well (10.33/100 is very solid - NH), and should in my opinion drop FR and go for 6-hand. It's way more profitable and it lets you see a lot more hands, and thus you'll get more experience for when you're moving up in stakes.
Good luck! |
