any carpenters here? i think im screwed
for some reason the plate where the door closes was connected only to the jam with little tiny screws. being the genius, i thought id replace those with some 3" screws to secure it to the stud. so i drilled a pilot hole, then drive the screw in, then all of a sudden, the screw starts turning like crazy. i thought it came out the side of the stud or split it or something. turns out the screw head twisted off (broke) and now the rest of the screw is stuck in the stud.
its too dark and cold to work on now, but i dont think i can drill a hole into the screw to back it out. theres no other options, is there? |

Re: any carpenters here? i think im screwed
Unless you want to move the whole hinge so the screw holes don't line up with your busted screw, I don't think there's anything you can do.
If it were me, I would just leave that hole empty and put screws in the other two because trying to move that hinge would be a f'ing bitch. Also, don't use cheap dry-wall screws because they do this pretty easily. Get some beefy ones. (These will not only not break when you're installing them, they will make it harder for someone to kick your door in also. I know that's not terribly likely to happen, but still.) |

drill into the screw until it disintegrates away. then fill in the enlarged hole with some wood and put in a new screw.
i assume you are talking about the strike plate where the bolt goes into. a long screw should hit a two by four stud after the empty space between the door frame and the stud. |

Ohhh...that sucks.
Can you the see broken screw at all? Boy. I don't know what to tell you, unless you can get ahold of it with some pliers or something. Or maybe just go with one screw in the plate, but that's hardly ideal. |

Re: any carpenters here? i think im screwed
If you can get to the screw, maybe by removing a little bit of the wood, you might be able to use vise grips to remove it by hand. I guess it depends on how much broke off.
