Re: Three and a half billion years fossils!
[ QUOTE ]
Alternatively, 4 GYA - 3.5 GYA != 400 000 year [/ QUOTE ] A bit cryptic a statement, Ohgod!? |

Re: Three and a half billion years fossils!
Sorry - the time difference between the formation of the earth (approximately 4 billion years) and these fossils (3.5 billion years (GYa)) is ~500 million years. I was pointing out that NotReady was out by three orders of magnitude, nothing more than that. Notation explanation - in geology, MYa = million years ago, GYa = billion years ago.
Of course, I was just using the figures from the posts further up - the generally accepted age of the Earth is around 4.5 billion years, so NR was even more wrong. So wrong, in fact, that I'm worred I've missed some subtle point/joke... |

3.9-3.5 billion is 400 million, not 400 thousand [/ QUOTE ] Oh yeah, thanks. Well, that's obviously enough time to turn rocks and methane into microbes. |

I suspect you have no idea how long a stretch of time 400 million years actually is. Plus, the time from the formation of the Earth to the formation of these fossils is closer to a billion years. Time to the earliest indications of microbial life is ~700 miliion years. |

And I was figuring from earth age of 4.5 b to 3.9 b (end of bombardment). There is some evidence of life at 3.87 which would only leave 30,000 years, shoot, that's enough to go from nothing to man, I guess. |
