Re: General Bridge Discussion Thread
no.
if you don't have a hand, don't go for it, I'd say. Especially since you know your partner has <12 pts probably, so you're not really missing out on a potential big hand. IMO, one of the most important parts of bidding (especially when you're as inexperienced as I am) is sticking to your system, so that you know you can trust your partner, so if you don't have the points, don't open. |

if you are the dealer, and everyone passes to you. is it like poker and you should never open fold the button. [/ QUOTE ]So if you have a hand like J52[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 8732[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 954[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 654[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] You're going to bid 1[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]? heh |

Nobody has required 13 points for an opening since the mid 60's An commonly used rule of thomb (sp?) on whether to open the bidding in 4th seat is 'McPearsons rule': Open if no. of spades + hcp >=15 The reason obv is that if we have a borderline opening hand in 4th seat, the hcp's are most certainly pretty evenly distributed among the four players, and the hand will certainly be a part score battle. In part score battles spades are teh g00t ldo |

ok, so if bidding goes
p, 1d, 1s, p, 2s, p... and I bid one spade, how do I know if the 2 spade is weak/strong? |

[/ QUOTE ] 2S here shows 3+ spades and 6 - 9 points in support of spades (like Qxx, Jxxx, Kxxx, xx). With more you would bid 3S or 4S. You know his hand cannot be super strong, since he passed in the 1st seat. If you have a great hand for your overcall like AKxxx, xx, Ax, KQxx, then you invite to game with 3S (or 3C if you are scientifically minded). With less you should pass. I should mention that just about all of my bidding knowledge is based on duplicate, which is mainly concerned with getting to game (3NT, 4H, and 4S in particular) and not so concerned with it making; rubber games have more emphasis on the partscores. |

All of the stuff I've read consider the 13+ thing "standard", even if most of the better players open light. A good analogy is probably how a good poker player can open something like KTs in early position with small blinds because he knows how to get away from it, but beginners shouldn't. |

[/ QUOTE ] Correct for rubber bridge, but that's probably not what they're playing. I'm guessing they're just playing 'points' and that's actually the scoring method for which emphasis on part scores should be the lowest |
