Don't forget that just a year ago, it was rare for any site to spread higher than 10/20NL and 30/60LHE, and just a year or two before that, top games were ONLY 5/10NL and 15/30LHE. (Yes, some sites would offer higher, but it was NOTHING like it is today where nearly every site has several active tables of 10/20NL+).

[/ QUOTE ]

UB 25/50 has been around since early '04. It still runs pretty regularly and used to run just about 24/7 with a few tables going.

UB introduced 50/100 NL in April of '05. That game ran regularly for 12+ months before the player pool dried up.

There were a decent amount of players beating this game, but you are right in that most sites didn't spread games this high.

For 2007, I will guess 1,500.

[/ QUOTE ]

but this is not the question.

Anyway, there are people you've never heard of making 500k+, there are people you know of that you wouldn't expect to be making that much but are, and there are definitely people that you think are making over 500k that aren't. i have no idea how many people are or aren't personally. i'd be more interested to know what the average online pro makes per year at various levels.

I agree with the sentiment that very few MTT/donkament pros clear $500K annually on a consistent basis.

Officialpokerrankings provides a profit table for the past 120 days on all the sites they track. There are 27 tourney players that have cleared >$167K. Obviously, only a small fraction will maintain that win rate for an entire year (120 days X 3). On the other hand, the number is underestimated by the use of multiple IDs on different sites.

I'd guess (admittedly wildly) that there are a dozen or fewer mtt pros that have maintained a 500K annual win rate over the past 3 years, strictly from online mtts.

...far fewer than most estimates here...
..."1,500" : OMG, more like 1/10th that...

If you made 3.5 BB/100 @ 5/10 NL and played 2k hands a day, 5 days a week, 48 weeks a year, you'd make $336k a year. Not including any rakeback.

Seems to me a good grinder who put in the hours could do it at 5/10. Consistancy would be the key.

[/ QUOTE ]

stop doing this type of analysis. they don't mean much, not to mention that this one in particular is fairly ridiculous. It is very difficult to independently make 3.5ptbb/100 at 5/10, play 2k hands per day, and play that many days per year, let alone all together.

The more I think about it, I'd probably bet the under on 200 as long as we are talking about a span of a couple of years. There are a lot of people who have made 500k+ in one year, it's just hard to do it for 2-3+ years

[/ QUOTE ]
The number of people who have made over $500k per year for 3 years? I would set the line at perhaps 25, and I think that might be too high.

I think you guys are badly over estimating how many people win a lot of money at this game, even Taylor who is presumably one of those 25.

Add my vote to Sciolist's.

I'd be surprised if there was one person who has made 500k 3+ years in a row strictly from online mtts.

I have a hard time believing that the number is so low.

Between 8-12k hands a week is a standard 'work week' for a pro online poker player, imo.

The necessary winrates at 30/60 is about 1.5BB/100.
The necessary winrate at 10/20 is about 4bb/100.

That doesnt even count rb, supernova bonus stuff or other benefits. With all of that, and playing more hands a week, it's perfectly reasonable for someone to be doing it at 15/30 or 5/10NL.

rofl at making 500k at 30/60 limit

All,

Just for a humorous comparison, the average salary of Goldman Sachs's 22,000 employees last year was over $500k. The top 250 Goldman employees averaged about $7M each. Sorta sick how little money there really is in poker.

For an earning level to be valid it probably has to be averaged over 5 years of full time play. The effect of variance in poker is extreme and players with a nice positive edge can still have ugly long-term downswings of 1 year or more, just as negative edge players can have long-term upswings of 1 year or more.

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL at 6 millions hands to find your true WR. What type of std deviation does this need to get within .5PTBB/100 at a 95% CI. Like 2500PTBB/100?!?

[/ QUOTE ]

for 100k the WR flucuates by like 2ptbb

to get it under .5ptbb its probably somewhere in the 250k to 500k hand range
