Default tipping percentage on live jackpot?

A while back I saw that a large monte carlo jackpot ($8K I think it was) was hit at the casino I frequent. Upon asking a dealer who won it, he mentioned in an offhad way that the player didn't tip the dealer very much....so I asked what he considered to be a reasonable tip and he replied about 10%. This seems excessively large to me. What is the consensus? Also would you only tip the dealer or would you spread the tip between the dealers/house?

This is a problem I hope to face in the future

10% is probably a bit much... If you do a search of the Brick and Mortar forum you will probably find about 10 threads on this topic (and any other tipping topic you care to look at )

Some dealers like the notion that they should get a percent. Basically, after a certain amount.... there is a cutoff for most people. Even in 300/600 NL games, you will find people not tipping more than 100 after a big win. The simple reason is this .... dealers are dealers..... they do not have PHDs, they don't have power over the cards (tho some feel they should be rewarded extra for giving a player a hot hand), and it is easy for a casino to fire and re-hire another one.

Dealers should be tipped .... but there is a point where it is just stupid and they are being greedy. Most aren't like this .... but some are.

See in particular the conspicuous consumption point. I have no problem with you tipping anyone what you want to, but I refuse to accept that just because everyone else is playing poker to show off, so I must follow their lead (e.g., $4 on a $120 $4/8 pot or what have you).

A BBJ is paid for by additional rake taken out of pots. Dealers don't have a stake in the pots and don't lose anything by the pot winner paying an extra dollar per hand, so dealers aren't entitled to any of the BBJ.

I've never won a BBJ. As a courtesy and a token of appreciation I would tip something like 3-5 %. If I were a big winner, I might also throw in a little for other dealers in the room, floor staff, cage staff, etc. (but probably all summing to 5% or not much more). Any dealer who finds that number insulting is welcome to refuse the tip or to take it up in a meeting with me and casino management.

I was fortunate enough to be dealt into a BBJ hand and get a table share, which was 1600. Winning hand got 4000 and losing hand got 8000, I think. After all the paperwork was sorted out (took 2 hours, no kidding -- but worth it!) the jackass dealer started paying people out and kept saying "10% would be nice...10% would be nice..." I realized that if he gets 10% that's >$2000 and more than I got, when he paid nothing to the BBJ rake. So I gave him something like $50 and didn't lose any sleep over it.

I hope you win the jackpot and this guy deals it. Don't tip him at all. He shouldn't complain about getting money he did nothing to earn, no matter how little.

It would be like someone offering us a 5% rakeback to play any game any where any time. It's not much money, but it's free...

I don't get the whole dealer tipping thing either - they didn't do anything to cause the jackpot - might as well tip the manufacturer of the automatic shuffler as well.

FWIW, I've won two player's shares - about 700 each - I just tipped $5 the dealer who was sitting at a table with his little tip bucket waiting as the casino pays you out in chips. It was really cheesy.

FWIW, the whole process does take a while to sort out (3 hours for me). I would just tell the casino I don't have time to wait and come back later to collect your share - that way they just hand you an envelope full of cash with no ceremony.
