Hmmm...

If your bankroll is $1000, 5% of that is only one table of 50NL poker.

Assuming you don't have a thousand, stick to the play money or 5/10 cent poker games for awhile until the money is chips not cash.

Use the number of buyins as a guide not % of roll. For instance, 20 buyins at the micro limits is pretty standard for a winning player. Add 10 buyins on top of each level as you progress for protection against variance.

You can't hope to avoid going broke unless you're a winning player. If you're a winning player you still have a risk of going broke even with a large bankroll. You can estimate the risk with this formula:

risk of ruin= exp(-2*WR*B/SD^2)

where WR=winrate, B= bankroll, SD= standard deviation

Sorry. It's not as bad as it sounds. It's just four numbers. But you haven't played enough to worry much about them yet. If you play online, you'll eventually want to get a tracking program like PokerTracker, which will give you the numbers.

Playing short stacked is probably safer. Is it better? It depends on how you feel about the possibility of losing your $200. It's up to you.

Imagine how much money you save if you're the one with the second nuts. Imagine how many big stacks will call big bets from a short stacks with mediocre hands. Imagine making a short stack into big stack.
