Same as if an alien landed on earth.

The initial category would be "four legged thing." With experience, this would be refined into multiple categories, like hoofed things, retractable-claw feet things, non-retractable feet, and really big thing, run, whatever it is.

Besides thinking about dog differences, note dog similarities. They all bark, go jumping all around you, hump legs, sniff crotches, vs. the distance of cats -- these are clear distinctions that kids quickly absorb and universalize -- because that's what H Sapiens do.
