Switched to LHE about 5 months ago after about a year of 20/40 7CS. Read both Hold 'Em Poker and Hold 'em Poker For Advanced Players for months before I jumped in. Play mostly 10/20 and some 20/40 LHE at the Borgata in AC. In my short sample size I am comfortable in and do well in TAG games and so far easily beat LP games (who doesn't), but when I find myself in a mostly LAG game I usually get my nuts waxed and sit there confused because these people just aren't playing the same starting cards I do and I couldn't bring myself to give their two small pair bets credit when I hold TPTK. Just can't believe someone makes it 3 bets with J3o out of position, calls 2 cold with 2-6s 3 off the button, and the like. I've tried to adjust based on the "playing in loose games" chapters in these books and TOP. It hasn't helped so far. I know part of the problem is I lack experience. I'm honest about my weak areas and concentrate on them between sessions. I just received SSHE after reading it specifically addresses these LAG type games. While it says it's geared for 2/4 to 10/20, are the concepts applicable to the LAGGier 20/40 games I may run into at the Borg as well?
Thanks for any input. |

In my experience, SSHE is still very applicable to these games (though I've never played at Borgata).
Few players in these games use by the book type considerations when making preflop decisions which can make downstream hand reading very difficult. On the plus side, though these games can be very high variance, they're generally going to be enormously profitable, as eventually cold calling 3 bets with 75o will cost your opponents. Your basic adjustment is to discount the value of your top pair types hands when facing a turn raise and to learn to play more suited Ax, suited connectors and small/med. pairs. In games like these you often make your profit in the occasional huge pot which you drag with sets and flushes. Following the advice in Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players is still a sound way to make money, but SSHE offers adjustments and concepts which are specific to these types of games with big fields and loose play. |
