It's fairly common, but a lot of making a good life for yourself is weeding those people out. Plenty of people can't bring themselves to do that -- they don't want to meet new people, don't think anything can get better, feel they owe something to toxic people, whatever. But a certain ruthless culling can be productive and well-deserved.
Lots of thinking about why people do what they do is pointless and self-indulgent. Asking if a jerk is a jerk and why jerks are jerky doesn't usually accomplish much. It's not up to you to change people or understand them, but it is up to you to take care of yourself; nobody else is going to do it, after all. So maybe you need to have or get the guts to get rid of the people who are deadweight in your life. Lots of people have pasts like that, and do much better once they break from all that and create their lives from that point forward unencumbered and in their own image of what it could be.

Most people in life are douchebags. The sooner you realize this and take appropriate action, the better off you'll be. There is no no difference between "tv behavior" and "human behavior". Its all human behavior, tv just magnifies it.

My family love crap like Big Brother, not to mention all those reality competition shows involving dancing/singing/ice skating/anything that ITV1 and BBC1 always show.
